Supreme Court Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi resigns

In a recent development, Supreme Court Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi has resigned from his post amid accusations of misconduct.

Sending his resignation to President Arif Alvi, Justice Naqvi stated that he is no longer able to serve as a judge due to “circumstances which are a matter of public knowledge.”

“It was an honour to be appointed and to serve as a Judge first of the Lahore High Court, Lahore and then as the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In the circumstances which are a matter of public knowledge and to some extent public record, it is no longer possible for me to continue to serve as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Considerations of due process also compel so,” the judge said in a resignation letter sent to President Arif Alvi. I, therefore. effective today resign as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” stated the resignation letter.

The resignation comes after the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) filed a judicial referral against him, accusing him of “misconduct” and “amassing illegitimate assets.” The complaint alleges a breach of the Supreme Court’s rule of conduct for justices.
