T20 World Cup 2024: Ramiz Raja picks Pakistan’s opening pair

Ramiz Raja, former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has weighed in on Pakistan’s opening pair selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the United States starting June 1.

Raja, sharing his insights on his YouTube channel, suggested that Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan should form Pakistan’s opening duo, following Saim Ayub’s underwhelming performance in the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

Expressing his views, Raja emphasized that the series against New Zealand didn’t provide conclusive answers but rather highlighted unresolved issues.

He pointed out Ayub’s inconsistency with his technique across matches, which added pressure on him.

Raja drew parallels with Babar Azam’s early career struggles with confidence and experience.

Highlighting the need for stability at the top, Raja advocated for the tried and tested combination of Babar and Rizwan, stating that their partnership would provide a safer option for Pakistan.

He noted the importance of building momentum in the initial overs, which has been hindered by early wickets.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 schedule includes matches against USA, India, Canada, and Ireland in Group A, with the tournament featuring various groups including powerhouse teams like England, Australia, and New Zealand in different groups.
