Tank attack on UN shelter in Gaza claims nine lives, UNRWA director reports

An attack by tanks on a UN shelter in the primary southern city of Khan Younis in Gaza has resulted in the death of at least nine individuals, as reported by the Gaza head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

“Two tank rounds struck a building providing shelter for 800 people — current reports indicate 9 fatalities and 75 injuries,” stated Thomas White, the director of UNRWA in Gaza, on X (formerly Twitter).

Sixteen international humanitarian and rights organizations have jointly called for a cessation of arms transfers to both Israel and Palestinian armed groups as a measure to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza, according to AFP reports.

In their collective statement, these organizations appealed to United Nations member states to discontinue sending weapons, components, and ammunition to prevent the crisis in Gaza and mitigate the potential for further humanitarian catastrophes and loss of civilian lives.

The statement emphasized that Israel’s bombardment and siege are causing severe deprivation among the civilian population, making Gaza increasingly uninhabitable.

The organizations expressed concern about the unprecedented severity and scale of the humanitarian crisis faced by the civilian population in Gaza.

The joint statement also noted that, following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, armed groups in Gaza have persistently launched rockets indiscriminately toward population centers in Israel.
