Taylor Swift surpasses Adele’s nine year record with ‘TTPD’

Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” has achieved the highest opening week sales for any album in the past nine years.

Released on April 19th, it quickly garnered 2.61 million streams, a milestone not seen since Adele’s “25” in 2015.

According to a report by Variety, the album also amassed 891.37 million on-demand streams, surpassing the previous record set by Drake’s “Scorpion” in 2018.

This success surpasses Swift’s previous records, including “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” which debuted with 1.653 million units last October, and “Midnights,” which achieved 1.578 million units by the end of 2022.

“The Tortured Poets Department” not only excelled in digital formats but also in physical sales, selling 1.914 million copies in its first week.

Additionally, it set a new record in the vinyl market, with 859,000 copies sold in the first week, the highest for any album in the modern era.

Swift took to Instagram and other platforms to express her gratitude to fans for their overwhelming support, stating, “My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album. 2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming ‘The Tortured Poets’ into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed.”
