Thailand Parliament approves marriage equality bill, same-sex unions to be legalized

Thailand’s parliament passed a marriage equality bill with overwhelming support, marking a significant milestone for the country.

The bill, which had backing from all major parties, still needs Senate approval and the king’s endorsement to become law.

If enacted, Thailand would join Taiwan and Nepal in legalizing same-sex unions.

The legislation aims to reduce societal disparity and promote equality, reflecting Thailand’s progressive stance on LGBTQ+ issues alongside traditional Buddhist values.

Despite Thailand’s reputation as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, activists argue that existing laws discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals and couples.

The bill recognizes marriage between two people irrespective of gender, granting them full rights under civil and commercial law, including inheritance and adoption.

However, some unresolved issues remain, such as gender-neutral language in references to the family unit, highlighting the need for further progress towards full marriage equality.
