UN envoy: Patience is running out for engagement with the Taliban

On Tuesday, a US envoy called for rapprochement with Afghanistan’s interim government to promote management that benefits the Afghan people while adhering to global community norms.

According to an Anadolu Agency report, Markus Potzel, the UN Secretary-Deputy General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, told the UN Security Council that “Patience is running out by many in the international community regarding a strategy of engagement with Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.”

As per the report, he further added that it is unclear what would happen next if the Taliban do not respond to the needs of all elements of Afghan society and work cooperatively with the global community within the very narrow window of opportunity.

“While success is not certain, continued qualified engagement remains the most realistic chance of achieving these objectives,” Potzel said.

He also alerted that further fragmentation, separation, deprivation, and internal conflict could result in large-scale migration, a domestic environment conducive to terror organizations, as well as an increase in misery for the Afghan people, as stated by the report.

No country has recognized the Taliban since they took over the government on August 15, last year. The Taliban’s takeover of the country has resulted in economic, humanitarian, and human rights crises. Women and girls have also had their rights violated. Thousands of people have lost their jobs or been forced to resign.
