US expects Gaza aid pier to be operational in two to three weeks

The US-made pier aimed at bolstering aid to Gaza is set to become operational in a few weeks, as confirmed by the White House on Sunday. However, it’s stated that the pier cannot fully replace land routes for delivering essential supplies to the territory, despite ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian crisis triggered by Israel’s prolonged conflict with Hamas.

According to White House national security spokesman John Kirby, while the floating platform will enhance aid delivery, it has its limitations.

President Joe Biden has directly urged Israel to change its approach to the conflict, stressing the importance of allowing more aid and minimizing civilian casualties. The US administration has made it clear that continued aid to Israel depends on these changes being implemented.

Kirby noted that Israel has begun to increase the entry of trucks, especially in the severely affected northern areas of Gaza, in line with Biden’s requests. Plans for the pier were initially disclosed by President Biden in early March amid concerns about delays in aid deliveries via land routes.

Kirby also mentioned that Israel has agreed to consult with the US before launching an invasion of the border city of Rafah in Gaza, demonstrating a commitment to address shared concerns.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit the region next week, with a focus on advocating for a temporary ceasefire lasting at least six weeks.

Meanwhile, a Hamas delegation is set to hold talks in Cairo on Monday to pursue efforts to secure a ceasefire.
