Women breaking barriers as food delivery riders in Lahore

In Lahore and similar urban centres, a traditionally male-dominated role, wood delivery, is gradually seeing a shift as more women are taking up the task alongside their male counterparts.

Per Mile food delivery riders report encountering predominantly positive attitudes from customers, with female customers especially appreciative and encouraging. Despite facing individuals of varying temperaments and mindsets, female riders are prepared to handle any situation they encounter.

One such rider shared her journey, stating that initially, her decision to pursue a job in food delivery was met with resistance from her father. However, after some persuasion, she succeeded in gaining his support, and now her family takes pride in her accomplishments.

Muzamil Haji, a food delivery rider at McDonald’s Gulberg, is another example of resilience and determination. Hailing from the Shimla Pahari area of Lahore, Muzamil juggles her studies and her part-time job to support her family financially. Learning to ride a bike from her father, Muzamil overcame initial challenges to become proficient and fearless in her role.

Similarly, Kashf Nadeem, residing in Awan Town, balances college during the day with her evening job as a food delivery rider. Despite encountering occasional stares and comments while on the road, both Kashf and Muzamil have experienced overall positive interactions with customers. Their commitment to providing excellent service, including timely updates on delivery status, has earned them respect and appreciation from clients.

While some male riders have reported facing unwanted comments and behaviour, female riders like Muzamil and Kashf have found support and encouragement from their customers. With more than 50 food delivery riders per mile in Lahore, companies like McDonald’s emphasize training their riders to handle diverse situations professionally and ensure customer satisfaction.

According to Umar Aziz, a manager at McDonald’s Gulberg branch, female riders are particularly valued for their service, and the company prioritizes equal opportunities for all employees regardless of gender. Despite societal challenges, women like Muzamil and Kashf are breaking barriers and contributing to the workforce, thanks in part to changing attitudes and increased opportunities for women’s empowerment.
