World’s oldest man, Jose Paulino Gomes, passes away at 127

Jose Paulino Gomes, recognized as the world’s oldest man, peacefully departed this world at the remarkable age of 127, just days before his anticipated 128th birthday, in his residence at Corrego do Cafe, Brazil. Born on August 4, 1895, as documented in his 1917 marriage certificate, Jose lived through significant historical events, including witnessing the inception of the first-ever proms, the inaugural rugby league football game, and the discovery of X-rays.

Willyan Jose Rodrigues de Souza, a legal advisor, confirmed the late-1800s birth date, which, if verified, would surpass the current Guinness World Records holder, Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera, who is 115 years old. Jose led a modest life as an animal trainer, preferring the simplicity of locally sourced and natural products.

Fondly remembered by his seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, Jose was cherished for his distinctive choices, which involved eschewing industrialized goods in favor of those from the countryside. His granddaughter, Eliane Ferreira, recalled how he raised animals and relied on locally grown food and beverages.

Although the accuracy of his documentation was questioned due to rural customs, Jose’s family was certain of his age, having witnessed him live for over a century. His passing, attributed to multiple organ failure, was a natural outcome considering his advanced age. The Brazilian countryside mourns the loss of a man who not only lived an extraordinary life but also created priceless memories with his loved ones.

While not yet officially confirmed by Guinness World Records, Jose’s remarkable lifespan and the profound impact he made on those around him remain undeniable. He was laid to rest in Pedra Bonita’s Corrego dos Fialhos Cemetery, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that will be celebrated for generations to come.
