16 inmates test positive for HIV in Peshawar central jail

At least 16 inmates at Central Jail Peshawar have tested positive for HIV.

Superintendent Waseem Khan confirmed the cases, mentioning that modern testing equipment was used to detect the virus.

These prisoners, identified as drug addicts, have been isolated to prevent HIV from spreading further. Jail authorities are ensuring they receive medical care and counseling.

Out of 3,400 inmates, 549 were tested, with 16 found positive. This incident sheds light on the overcrowding issue in Pakistani prisons, notably Adiala Jail. The Human Rights Commission report from 2022 highlighted that Adiala Jail, designed for 2,174 prisoners, currently holds over 6,098.

Moreover, with just one male doctor for the entire male population, the healthcare situation appears dire. The report also raises concerns about corruption, noting that some officers have been in their positions for decades, potentially fostering corrupt practices.
