Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Karachi Amir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman claims that the Election Commission has turned into a tool of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) since it was unable to announce the results of the city’s six union council elections.
Speaking to the media on Friday, he claimed that the JI had won the most votes in the most recent Karachi local government elections.
According to Hafiz Naeem, the JI provided the Election Commission with evidence of its performance in five union councils, but the Election Commission has evolved into a PPP political tool.
He asserted that it was the Election Commission’s job to conduct fair elections. It was failing to uphold its constitutional duty. The JI leader questioned why the outcomes of 11 union councils were not made public.
He asserted that the PPP believed it would lose the elections in these 11 union councils and wished they had not been held.
Hafiz Naeem had petitioned the Sindh High Court to request that the Election Commission be ordered to hold elections in the city’s remaining union committees.
He argued before the court that the lack of elections for the 11 seats of chairman and vice chairman of Karachi’s union council was due to the passing of the candidates or other factors.
The JI leader asked the court to order the Election Commission to organize polls for the final 11 seats right away so that Karachi’s mayor could be chosen.
