All 11 Senate candidates from Balochistan elected unopposed

There won’t be any voting for the 11 Senate seats from Balochistan as all the candidates have been elected unopposed before the scheduled election on April 2nd. This includes seven candidates for general seats and two each for seats reserved for women and technocrats.

Maulana Abdul Wasey from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) and Bilal Khan Mandokhail from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have secured the reserved seats. Additionally, nine other candidates from Balochistan have been elected without contest, including former caretaker prime minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar as an independent candidate on a general seat.

Other successful candidates from Balochistan on general seats include Syed Nasir and Agha Shahzeb Durrani from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Sardar Umar Gorgej from PPP, John Buledi from National Party, Aimal Wali from Awami National Party, and Ahmed Khan from JUI-F.

Furthermore, PML-N and PPP have secured the two women’s seats with Rahat Jamali and Hasna Bibi being elected respectively.

In Punjab, seven candidates have been elected unopposed for general seats, including PML-N leaders Pervaiz Rasheed, Nasir Mehmood, and Talal Chaudhry, along with Mohsin Naqvi and Ahad Cheema. Raja Nasir Abbas backed by Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and Hamid Khan have also been elected without contest.

However, elections will be held for five seats reserved for technocrats, women, and minorities in Punjab.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced the Senate elections on April 2nd to fill 48 vacant seats. This followed the expiration of the 6-year term of the incumbent senators, with 52 seats becoming vacant. However, elections are only being held for 48 seats as the four reserved seats for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) were abolished after the 25th Constitutional amendment.
