Alvi, Bajwa in Lahore with Shehbaz yet to return from London

All eyes are once again focused on Lahore as President Arif Alvi and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa spent the Friday night in the city with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif yet to return from London.

PM Shehbaz is currently in London to consult former prime minister Nawaz Sharif about the political quagmire in the country and the appointment of a new army chief.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan is currently recuperating in Lahore after being wounded in an attempted assassination earlier this month.

President Alvi has taken the initiative in the continuing backchannel talks between the army and the PTI.

According to media reports, Gen. Bajwa and Khan have already had at least one direct meeting with him at the President’s office.

Reports citing sources in PTI claimed that when the President visited Imran Khan last weekend to check on his health, he gave Gen. Bajwa’s message.

President Alvi is reported to meet with Khan and Gen. Bajwa on Saturday.

Media reports claim that former PM Nawaz Sharif had allegedly refused to make any concessions for reducing political tensions and this would serve as the backdrop for the meeting. Previous reports stated that the army had pushed the PTI and PML-N to back off so that the upcoming transition could proceed easily.
