Armenia’s prime minister in Russia for talks amid strain in ties

Armenia’s Prime Minister engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow amidst escalating tensions between the two erstwhile allies. The meeting took place following their participation in a summit of the Eurasian Economic Union, a Moscow-led economic bloc. Putin acknowledged growing bilateral trade but noted concerns regarding regional security.

Pashinyan highlighted accumulated issues since his last visit in December, reflecting strained relations exacerbated by Azerbaijan’s military campaign to reclaim the Karabakh region. Armenia has criticized Russian peacekeepers’ response to the conflict, while also distancing itself from Moscow’s influence by suspending payments to the Collective Security Treaty Organization and seeking closer ties with the West.

Despite these tensions, both sides express a commitment to dialogue, with the Kremlin acknowledging challenges in bilateral relations but stating the importance of continued engagement.
