Authorities not allowing legal team to meet Shah Mehmood Qureshi, claims lawyer

The lawyer for former foreign minister and Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Shah Mehmood Qureshi informed journalists on Monday that he was prohibited by the authorities from visiting his client in custody.

According to the attorney, Taimur Malik, “not even his daughter is being allowed to see him [Qureshi].”

He said that the legal team will attempt to see him in jail once again today. “Nothing can be said about the undertaking unless a meeting is held [with the PTI leader],” he said.

Malik emphasized that we could only file an undertaking after receiving instructions from him.

Additionally, the PTI leader is still being held by the police five days after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared his detention to be unlawful and issued a release order.

The PTI leader’s appeal against his detention last week under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Act (3MPO) was heard by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb.

The court ordered the competent officials to ensure his release when he formed an undertaking and found the arrest to be invalid.

Additionally, the PTI leader is still being held by the police five days after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared his detention to be unlawful and issued a release order.

The court has delayed hearings until May 24 and sent notifications to the interior secretary and inspector general of police for their responses.

In addition to the cases that were previously known to the defence team, Malik asked the court to require the authorities to provide information about any further cases that had been filed against Qureshi.

The attorney urged the court to issue directives for Qureshi to appear before the judge.
