Hill portrayed Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film and King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
His breakout performance occurred in the 1982 BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff, where he embodied Yosser Hughes, a character grappling with unemployment in Liverpool.
His agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his passing early on Sunday morning.
