Biden holds informal meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah amid Gaza ceasefire tensions

President Joe Biden is set to engage in an informal private meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House, as tensions persist over the prospects of a Gaza ceasefire. This meeting comes against the backdrop of Hamas and Israeli officials trading blame for the ongoing impasse.

Hamas has reiterated its demand for a ceasefire, linking it to the release of hostages, a proposal rejected outright by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Recent escalations include an attack at the Kerem Shalom crossing, resulting in casualties among Israeli soldiers.

Discord between Biden and Israeli officials is evident regarding Israel’s planned military action in Rafah, with Palestinians advised to evacuate certain areas. Jordan and other Arab nations have voiced strong criticism of Israel’s actions, urging a ceasefire since mid-October due to rising civilian casualties.

Gaza’s health ministry reports over 34,600 Palestinians killed and more than 77,000 wounded in Israel’s offensive.
