Chief Minister has 24 hours to have 186 members support, says LHC

Lahore High Court during the hearing of the governor’s denotification order stated that Chief Minister has 24 hours to have the support of 186 members.

A five-member bench of the LHC headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh heard the petition against the removal of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi from the post of Chief Minister.

Apart from Justice Abid, the other members of the bench included Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabir, and Justice Asim Hafeez.

Barrister Ali Zafar during the hearing said that Pervaiz Elahi has become the Chief Minister only by taking votes, to which Justice Asim said that the Chief Minister has 24 hours, he should have the support of 186 members.

Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh also added that the governor could request the chief minister to seek a vote of confidence from the assembly.

The Lahore High Court also directed Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s lawyers to let LHC know how much time is needed to seek a vote of confidence so that they can set a date.

On the other side, Pakistan’s attorney general Mansoor Awan highlighted that the CM was required to vote on the governor’s order.

“The governor has the authority to request that the CM take a vote of confidence,” the AGP emphasized.
