Communal tensions rise as Hindu mob targets Imam Shah Baba shrine in Ahmedabad

Late Thursday night, the centuries-old dargah of Imam Shah Baba near Ahmedabad was at the center of a volatile situation as a Hindu mob reportedly vandalized graves and placed idols within the shrine area, sparking communal tensions.

This led to clashes and stone-throwing, prompting police intervention. At present, authorities have detained 30 individuals in connection with the incident.

The destruction of graves, including those of Imam Shah and his family members, caused distress among Muslim residents of Pirana village, who rushed to the site upon hearing of the desecration.

Police statements indicate that the shrine dispute involves members of both Hindu and Muslim communities, but tensions heightened early Friday as community members gathered at the site after the grave destruction.

Police personnel sustained injuries as clashes intensified while attempting to control the situation. Despite reassurances from law enforcement to address grievances and restore the damaged graves, residents remain wary amid ongoing tensions. Imam Shah Baba, revered among Muslims, Hindus, and others, has symbolized communal harmony for centuries.

Nevertheless, the shrine has faced controversies and disputes, particularly since the Babri Masjid demolition, with efforts made to assert control and alter its historical significance.
