Competition commission clears merger in Pakistan’s thermal power sector

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has greenlit a merger in the thermal power industry, involving the purchase of a 20.97% stake in Orient Power Company by a private firm. This move marks the entry of Whistler Enterprises Private Limited, a new player in the Pakistani legal landscape, into the sector.

Whistler Enterprises Private Limited specializes in power generation, signaling its intent to expand its footprint in the energy domain. Meanwhile, Orient Power Company Private Limited, an independent power producer, operates a 225 MW power plant in Kasur.

The merger aims to enhance efficiency and productivity in the thermal power sphere, fostering competition and innovation. With the Competition Commission’s nod, the deal meets regulatory standards, ensuring the protection of consumer interests and market competitiveness.
