Crackdown on electricity theft: Government warns of job losses for offenders

Energy Minister Sardar Owais Khan Laghari has declared that officials engaged in electricity theft will face dismissal from their positions, emphasizing a commitment to preventing overbilling.

The government plans to crack down on electricity theft, prompted by the staggering receivable bills of electricity distribution companies, which have soared to Rs900 billion. Laghari highlighted that this loss, projected to hit Rs560 billion this year alone, is unsustainable for the nation.

In the energy sector, outstanding electricity bills amount to Rs1900 billion, with units worth Rs300 billion consumed without payment.

Federal Energy Minister Owais Leghari has requested a report on the kunda system’s status by April 23.

Laghari stressed that 20 percent of the population is causing significant harm to Pakistan by stealing electricity, ultimately damaging the national economy.

He reiterated that such losses are no longer tolerable for the country.
