ECP contempt case: Imran Khan’s plea against jail trail fixed for hearing

The petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan against the ‘jail trial’ in a contempt case by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has been scheduled for a hearing.

According to the details, the Lahore High Court (LHC) registrar’s office has set the petition for a hearing on January 29, listing the federal government, ECP, and others as complainants.

On January 22, the Lahore High Court had previously rejected Imran Khan’s petition to halt the ‘jail trial’ in the contempt case by the ECP.

It’s important to note that Imran Khan, along with former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry, was indicted in the contempt case by the Election Commission of Pakistan on January 3.

The hearing for this case took place in Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently being held.

During the hearing, the accused in the case were formally charged through a read-aloud indictment, leading to the adjournment of the hearing until January 16.

In August 2022, the ECP had issued notices to Imran Khan and others for allegedly using “intemperate” language against Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja and the electoral watchdog.

The political leaders had consistently criticized the commission and CEC Sikandar Raja, referring to the electoral body as a “subsidiary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.”
