ECP postpones local body elections in Karachi, Hyderabad due to rain and floods

The Election Commission of Pakistan has postponed the second phase of Sindh local government elections scheduled for August 28 in 16 districts of Karachi and Hyderabad due to rain-induced flooding.

The LG elections were postponed due to the possibility of additional rain on August 24 and 25 on the advice of the provincial election commissioner and the district administration.

According to the ECP, local government elections in Karachi’s East, West, South, Central, Korangi, Keamari and Malir, along with Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, Dadu, Badin, Sujawal, and Thatta have been postponed.

According to the electoral commission, the new date would be announced when conditions improve.

The decision was made today during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The final decision was made based on a report given by provincial election commissioner and district administration.

The ECP secretary stated to the participants of the meeting that the administration, police, and other security agencies were involved in the provision of relief to flood victims in Sindh and delivering of food to affected areas.

The LG elections had already been postponed because of rain.

According to a notification ECP sent earlier on Tuesday, the second round of the Sindh LG elections were due to be held on August 28.

Additionally, the Sindh High Court denied the Jamaat-e-Islami and Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf’s request for the immediate convening of the LG polls’ second round.
