EU Commission president promises new humanitarian aid for flood affected

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her grief over the loss of lives while meeting PM Shehbaz on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

She conveyed her sorrow over the loss of life caused by the nation’s devastating floods and promised new humanitarian aid in the coming weeks.

Von der Leyen, after the meeting with PM Shehbaz, tweeted and expressed “personal condolences for the victims of the terrible floods”.

She further said, “We will come forward with new humanitarian aid in the coming weeks, to support the people of Pakistan.”

The Pakistan government and the United Nations on Tuesday together made a quick appeal for $160 million to assist the country in coping with the devastating floods.

According to local media reports, Pakistan and the UN would probably release a revision of the emergency request for more funding early next month to deal with the disastrous floods.

Since June 14, the floods brought on by climate change have killed 1,576 people, uprooted 33 million people, destroyed 30 billion dollars worth of property, and destroyed houses, crops, bridges, roads, and livestock.
