Fact check: Alleged assassination attempt on Saudi crown prince MBS debunked

Rumors circulated on social media platforms on Tuesday regarding an alleged assassination attempt targeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, these claims have been debunked as false.

The speculations, which spread rapidly on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that a heavily armed security convoy carrying the Saudi crown prince and other high-ranking officials was bombed in Riyadh. Videos purportedly showing the assassination attempt also circulated online, leading to reports of increased security measures in the capital city.

Despite the widespread dissemination of these claims, there was no official confirmation of any attempted assassination on the Saudi crown prince.

BBC journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh addressed the issue on X, labeling the claims as “completely baseless.” He emphasized, “A totally baseless claim about an assassination attempt on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is going viral on X after being shared by fake osint accounts and well-known misinformation spreaders seeking engagement. There’s zero evidence for the claim,” effectively dispelling the speculation.

Additionally, BRICS News refuted reports of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s assassination, categorizing them as false. They clarified, “Reports of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman surviving an assassination attempt are unfounded. MBS was not the target of any assassination attempt; this is misinformation.”

Regarding the video allegedly depicting the assassination attempt, Siasat.com reported that it actually captured footage from a fire incident in Riyadh, managed by the Civil Defense on March 16, 2024.
