Five migrants die hours after UK passes Rwanda asylum bill

Five migrants, including a child, lost their lives in a harrowing attempt to cross the English Channel from France to Britain on Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after the British parliament passed a bill authorizing the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda, aiming to deter perilous journeys across the Channel.

The tragic event unfolded as a crowded boat carrying 112 individuals embarked on the treacherous journey through one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Panic ensued among the passengers not far from the shore, leading to the fatal outcome. Rescuers managed to save 49 people, with four individuals requiring hospitalization. However, others chose to remain onboard, determined to reach British soil.

French authorities, including the coastguard, launched a search operation to locate any survivors amidst the challenging circumstances at sea. Local prefect Jacques Billant confirmed the devastating loss of five lives, including a seven-year-old girl, a woman, and three men, expressing sorrow over the tragic turn of events.

The boat’s engine malfunctioned shortly before reaching the shore, causing several individuals to fall into the water. Despite rescue attempts, 58 people opted to stay aboard, restarting the engine in a bid to continue their journey towards Britain.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by migrants attempting to reach safety in Britain, particularly via small, overcrowded boats that navigate perilous waters. The British government’s recent legislative move to permit deportations to Rwanda has sparked heated debates, with critics denouncing the policy as inhumane.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended the government’s stance, citing concerns over people smugglers exploiting vulnerable individuals and exacerbating the risks associated with sea crossings. However, human rights groups and activists have condemned the deportation scheme, emphasizing the fundamental right to seek asylum and the need for humane solutions to address migration challenges.

As legal challenges loom over the deportation policy, the tragic loss of lives serves as a stark reminder of the complex and urgent humanitarian issues surrounding migration routes across the English Channel.
