Former Caretaker Information Minister of Balochistan, John Achakzai, sparked controversy by branding Twitter as a ‘porn site’ and advocating for its closure, citing the platform’s alleged pornographic content.
Achakzai made the bold statement on Twitter itself, urging authorities to permanently shut down the platform and remove VPN access to it.
He argued that such measures would contribute to restoring peace in Pakistan. However, his remarks triggered strong reactions from social media users, who criticized his stance.
Additionally, Achakzai referenced the government’s purported intention to shut down Twitter, highlighting ongoing discussions surrounding the ban. Despite concerns raised by various sectors, including journalists and social workers, the ban on Twitter has persisted since February 17, following orders from the Ministry of Interior.
The decision to restrict access to Twitter stemmed from security concerns and reports from intelligence agencies. Nonetheless, there have been calls to lift the ban, especially from freelancers and those accessing the platform via VPN. It’s worth noting that Pakistan joins a list of countries, including Russia, Iran, China, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, and North Korea, that have implemented bans on Twitter.
