GCU Lahore appoints first female vice-chancellor in 160-year history

In a rare move, the Punjab government has named Professor Dr. Shazia Bashir as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Government College University (GCU), Lahore.

Dr. Bashir, who has been with GCU since 1996 and has a strong background in mathematics and physics, is appointed by Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman for a four-month term or until a permanent Vice Chancellor is appointed.

This decision comes amidst a leadership crisis in Punjab’s public universities, with nearly 29 institutions operating without permanent vice-chancellors.

The Higher Education Department oversees 34 government universities in the province, with concerns rising over the impact on teaching and research quality due to the absence of permanent leadership. Key positions like vice-chancellors, registrars, treasurers, and controllers of examinations remain vacant across many universities in the province.
