Give peace a chance in Russia-Ukraine row

Recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met in order to discuss the ongoing issue of Ukraine. The meeting can either be described as a continuation of a stalemate between the long-time adversaries or a bid to avoid any sort of confrontation. Before the meeting started both sides were said to be quite pessimistic with regards to the outcome. Both representatives made it clear that a breakthrough will be highly unlikely as the differences between the two nations remain intact. After the meeting, it was revealed that the Russians have asked for a written response to the Russian security demands. After the meeting, the Russian foreign minister said that his country has no intention of invading Ukraine. Moreover, it was revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to meet President Biden to discuss this issue with proper preparation for the meeting. Moreover, Russia did not shy away from restating that its demand that Ukraine does not become a part of NATO still stands. With Ukraine becoming a part of NATO, western armed forces will be too near the Russian border and this could add fuel to the fire as no buffer zone would exist.

Although Russia demands it, the United States and European allies of NATO reiterated that they will not reject Ukraine’s request to join the group. On the flip side, Russia is strong-arming its border with Ukraine and is likely to invade the country if it joins NATO. The allies in Europe and the US continue to warn Russia against any such action, however, it is not clear if the Russians will listen or not. One can predict that if Ukraine is allowed to join NATO, Russia will most likely invade.

However, with Ukraine having the support of the United States, there could be an outbreak of hostilities between the two powers with Ukraine as their playground.

However, President Biden’s government has warned Russia of economic sanctions which is an even worse punishment in this day and age. Although talks are underway and the countries are acting in a civil manner, tensions are likely to rise as neither side will compromise on its agenda. This Ukraine issue seems to be a longstanding problem as Russia has already annexed Crimea, which is a part of Ukraine and it can go further.

While the US will most likely work towards admitting Ukraine into NATO in order to be closer to the enemy.
