Guardiola believes England can win Euro 2024

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that England could win Euro 2024 if they take inspiration from City’s success in the Champions League. Guardiola achieved City’s first Champions League title last season after several close calls, and he thinks England can also break through after coming close in recent tournaments.

Guardiola noted that England coach Gareth Southgate is capable of guiding his team to victory. England has faced some heartbreaking defeats in major competitions, losing to Italy in the 2021 Euro final, Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, and France in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final.

“They are very strong,” Guardiola said on Friday. “It’s not just about the strikers; it’s the entire team. Gareth knows what to do.” Guardiola feels England is on the right path, having reached advanced stages in major tournaments recently. “They are close. They lost a final and reached a semi-final. If they keep getting this far, they’ll eventually win. It’s similar to our journey in the Champions League.”

Guardiola believes that the passionate support from English fans, which has sometimes pressured players, could now work in their favor. “When England plays in European tournaments or World Cups, the fans are incredibly supportive,” Guardiola explained. “It’s a sign of how proud people are of their national team. When players feel that pride from their country, it boosts their confidence. If they believe in themselves, they can succeed.”

Guardiola suggested that Manchester City forward Phil Foden could play a big role in England’s success, given his stellar performances. The 23-year-old was recognized for his skills when he won the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award.

Guardiola said Foden, who rose through City’s youth system to become a key player, has the potential to become one of the club’s legends. “This club has a long history with many great players,” he said. “But if Foden stays with City and continues playing at this level, he could be one of the best players in City’s history.”
