IHC contempt notices in audio leaks case: IB, FIA, and PTA chiefs summoned

Regarding the audio leaks case, the Islamabad High Court has dismissed objection petitions against Justice Babar Sattar, deeming them “malicious” and driven by “ill intent.”

The court has also issued preliminary contempt notices to the heads of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

This move underscores the court’s resolve to hold accountable any individuals who may have flouted legal standards or impeded justice in the case.

Furthermore, the court has fined the petitioners Rs 500,000 for lodging “frivolous” applications aimed at pressuring the judge and halting case proceedings.

It noted that the IB, FIA, PTA, and PEMRA had collectively submitted applications as part of a concerted effort to influence proceedings.

Additionally, an order has been issued for the officer who facilitated the filing of the criminal petition to personally bear the expenses, emphasizing the importance of diligence and accountability in legal matters.

In a 40-page ruling, Justice Babar Sattar emphasized that the objection pleas were motivated by malice and sought to undermine judicial independence.

The court reiterated its commitment to ensuring full participation of all parties in the case concerning the surveillance of citizens’ phone calls, which has exposed governmental shortcomings in safeguarding constitutional rights.
