IMF expresses serious concern over illegal sale and purchase of cigarettes

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed serious concern over the tax evasion of 80 billion rupees from the illegal sale and purchase of cigarettes.

According to sources, finance ministry and FBR officials briefed the prime minister on the illegal sale and purchase of cigarettes while a monthly report of the action taken in this regard will also be presented to the prime minister.

Media sources reported that the Prime Minister directed to take action against illegal cigarette factories and directed the FBR to install track and trace systems at all cigarette factories soon.

FBR Inland Revenue Intelligence teams will raid illegal cigarette factories, and an action taken report against illegal cigarettes will also be sent to IMF.

According to the media, more than two dozen cigarette manufacturing companies are not yet involved in the track and trace system.
