IMF programme critical but not an end in itself, says PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that although the revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme was critical to Pakistan’s economy, it was not an end in itself.

PM Shehbaz in his tweet on Tuesday said that the IMF programme was critical to the country’s economy. He has also stressed upon breaking the “economic straitjacket” through structural reforms.

PM Shehbaz Sharif has said that the IMF programme has offered a pathway to re-orient Pakistan’s economy.

In his tweet, he added, “We will have to work hard to make it [economy] self-sufficient.”

IMF had approved the seventh and eighth combined reviews of Extended Fund Facility (EFF) Programme for Pakistan on Monday.

The fund, in a press release, had announced that its executive board had completed the combined seventh and eighth reviews of the “extended arrangement under the EFF”.

The IMF statement also reads, “The board’s decision allows for an immediate disbursement of $1.1 billion, bringing total purchases for budget support under the arrangement to about US$3.9 billion.”
