Import of Indian onion reduces price by 50pc

Following India’s decision to resume onion exports, the price of this essential vegetable in Pakistan has experienced a significant decline.

For several months, consumers grappled with soaring onion prices, reaching between Rs200 to Rs250 per kilogram. However, with the influx of Indian onions, the market saw a notable drop, with prices plummeting to Rs100 to Rs120 per kilogram.

Across various regions of Pakistan, the impact of this market shift varied. In Lahore, onions are now available at prices ranging from Rs80 to Rs100 per kilogram, while in Dera Ismail Khan and Swat, consumers can purchase one kilogram of onions for around Rs120. In Sukkur, the price stands slightly higher at Rs130 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, Punjab’s Food Minister, Bilal Yasin, provided insights into the state of food commodities within the province. Yasin revealed a surplus of 2.3 million metric tons of wheat stock, contributing to a stabilized supply of naan and roti across Punjab at reduced, government-notified prices.

Highlighting the tangible impact on consumers, Yasin noted a significant decrease in the price of a 20-kilogram bag of flour. Over the span of just one month, the cost of this essential staple plummeted by Rs1000, now retailing at Rs1700 to Rs1800 per bag. This downward trend in flour prices reflects a welcome relief for households grappling with economic pressures.
