Iranian president Raisi’s diplomatic visit to Karachi, security measures and civic impact

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made a significant entrance into Karachi, marking the second leg of his official three-day visit to Pakistan after his departure from Lahore.

His arrival was met with a warm welcome from Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and prominent political figures such as Aseefa Bhutto, Azra Pechuho, Sharjeel Memon, and Nasir Shah. Notably, this visit stands as a historic milestone, being the first by a foreign head of state since the new government took office after the February 8 elections.

However, amidst the diplomatic fervor, Karachi witnessed intensified security measures, including the closure of major roads, strict enforcement of Section 144, and a ban on drone camera usage. Mobile services faced disruptions in certain areas to ensure President Raisi’s safety during his engagements in the city.

President Raisi’s packed itinerary in Karachi includes paying respects at the mausoleum of Pakistan’s founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, underscoring the significance of cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

Moreover, he is set to be honored with an honorary doctorate from the Governor of Sindh, adding a prestigious highlight to his visit. Scheduled meetings with various dignitaries at the Governor’s House further emphasize the diplomatic agenda of President Raisi’s trip, aimed at fostering bilateral relations and mutual cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

However, the heightened security measures in Karachi have inconvenienced residents, with the complete closure of both tracks of Shaara Faisal, a vital artery in Karachi’s transportation network.

This closure has disrupted traffic flow from Jinnah Airport to the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and routes from Shaara Faisal to Shaara Quaideen and Gurumandir.

Additionally, all petrol pumps along Shaara Faisal have been temporarily shuttered to ensure smooth passage for President Raisi’s convoy. The cityscape is adorned with banners welcoming the esteemed guest, reflecting the anticipation and hospitality extended to President Raisi during his historic visit to Karachi.
