Islamabad court rejects Shahbaz Gill’s plea for post-arrest bail

A district and sessions court in Islamabad has rejected the plea for post-arrest bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill.

The reserved verdict of the court was announced by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal.

During the hearing of the previous day, Gill’s counsel informed the court that Gill was willing to apologize for any misunderstandings. Police produced all the relevant records and upon request of Gill’s lawyer, he was allowed to peruse the record.

The counsel also informed the court that the case was registered on basis of out-of-context and selected portion of the transcript of his live conversation on television and that his client had never thought of sedition.

Special prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi had stated before the court that Gill launched a systematic campaign against the armed forces’ senior hierarchy and also had tried to politicize the situation. He also informed the court that the medical board had dismissed the allegations of torture and evidence against Gill was sufficient to connect with the alleged crime.

A revision petition filed by Advocate General Islamabad Barrister Jahangir Khan Jadoon before the Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Adnan was dismissed by the court.

Shahbaz Gill, who is on judicial remand on charges of sedition and inciting members of the state institutions against the Pakistan Army, had filed a bail petition in Islamabad’s sessions court.

Gill was arrested on August 9 after his controversial remarks.
