The Accountability Court in Karachi denied bail requests made by Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani in a case involving assets beyond known sources of income.

Speaking to the media, Durrani said he will petition the Sindh High Court (SHC) as soon as the case’s full judgment was made public.

The case has placed the speaker of the provincial assembly on judicial remand, and the court has designated his home as a sub-jail.

The NAB filed a reference against the speaker, his family, and 13 other people in 2019 for allegedly amassing assets worth more than Rs1.61 billion through illicit means.

The bureau detained him from the SC grounds in December 2021 after the Supreme Court (SC) denied Durrani’s request for pre-arrest bail and ordered him to appear before the NAB and face the charges in the case.

Durrani showed up before the Supreme Court after eluding the anti-corruption monitor for more than a month. He had gone into hiding after the SHC withdrew his bail.
