Karachi court orders man to 80 lashes for false accusations against ex-wife

A man in Karachi has been sentenced to 80 lashes by a district and sessions court for denying paternity of his child and falsely accusing his ex-wife of adultery.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge (Malir), Shehnaz Bohyo, found Fareed Qadir guilty under Section 7(1) of the Offence of Qazf (Enforcement Of Hadd) Ordinance, 1979, for disowning his legal child and making false allegations against his ex-wife.

According to the ordinance, anyone found guilty of qazf shall be punished with eighty stripes.

The court stated that the convict’s testimony would not be admissible in any court of law after confirmation of the conviction from the Federal Shariat Court.

The verdict specified that the convict could remain on bail, provided he agreed to appear for the punishment of whipping at the designated time and place upon confirmation of the conviction by the court of appeal, and submitted a bail bond of Rs100,000.

However, the execution of the punishment was to be postponed until the decision on the convict’s appeal against the sentence.

In her plea, the convict’s former wife stated that he had not provided maintenance or taken her back to his home after the birth of their baby girl in December 2015.
