Katy Perry’s AI-generated Met Gala stunt fooled even her mother

US pop star Katy Perry recently shared AI-generated fake images on Instagram, pretending to attend the Met Gala in New York.

Despite not physically being there, she posted pictures of herself in various outfits on the famous steps of the Metropolitan Museum.

Perry jokingly mentioned her location as “Metaverse,” fooling many of her online followers, including her own mother, who thought she had actually attended the event.

Perry revealed the prank when her mother expressed surprise, cautioning her to beware of AI tricks.

This incident comes amidst a trend of celebrities exploring and utilizing AI technology for various purposes.

For instance, British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs disclosed earlier this year that she had created a deepfake version of herself to handle her online social media interactions while focusing on her art.

However, the misuse of AI, such as the creation of fake explicit images of celebrities, has raised concerns, prompting internet giants like Meta (Instagram, Facebook) and X to commit to deploying technologies to better detect and report AI-generated content.
