Lawyers observe countrywide strike against police violence

Lawyers’ associations throughout Pakistan are currently observing a nationwide strike to stand in solidarity with their colleagues in response to the alleged police violence against lawyers in Lahore on Wednesday.

In protest against the unlawful actions of the Punjab police, lawyers nationwide have launched a comprehensive strike, refraining from attending court sessions to express their support for the advocates of the Lahore Bar Association.

Furthermore, they have organized protest gatherings, marches, and rallies within their respective bar associations to voice their disapproval of the situation.

In a statement, Riazat Ali Sahar, the Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), strongly condemned the reported police violence against lawyers in Lahore, describing it as a severe assault on the legal community.

He asserted that the police subjected lawyers to brutal treatment, leading to numerous arrests, and said that every individual has the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

Sahar emphasized that the alleged brutality by the Punjab police against lawyers cannot be overlooked, stating that such actions have tarnished the dignity of the legal profession.

The PBC has called for appropriate action to be taken against the police officials involved in what it views as brutality against lawyers.
