NA Speaker decides to call PTI members for confirmation of resignations

National Assembly Secretariat replies to PTI Vice Chairman Qureshi's letter

The Speaker National Assembly (NA) has decided to reconvene Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members for confirmation of their resignations.

In response to PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s letter, the National Assembly Secretariat has written to him that between June 6 and 10 the members of the assembly were called to appear before the speaker and approve the resignations but not a single member appeared for confirmation.

“In order to confirm the resignations Speaker will invite the members of the National Assembly to appear again in his chamber, in which the members of the Assembly will confirm their resignations one by one in accordance with the Assembly Rules and Procedures,” the National Assembly Secretariat wrote in the letter.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi had written a letter to the Speaker last week to call the members for the immediate approval of the resignations. In the letter, Qureshi said that PTI members had resigned. He had asked for a date for verification on which they could come and verify.

Responding to Qureshi’s letter, the National Assembly Secretariat wrote, “According to the rules, the Speaker of the National Assembly can accept the resignation of any member only if he is satisfied that the resignation has been given without any pressure and in this regard, he will give the member of the National Assembly to his chamber or the National Assembly. You can call the secretariat and verify.

The letter written by the Assembly Secretariat has also referred to the decisions of the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court in which the Speaker of the National Assembly must be satisfied before the court accepts the resignations.
