Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane sentenced to 8 years in prison on rape charges

On January 10, The Kathmandu District Court condemned Nepal legspinner and rapist Sandeep Lamichhane to eight years in prison for his role in the sexual assault of an 18-year-old girl.

The verdict contained a Rs 300,000 fine and an extra Rs 200,000 compensation award for the victim.

Lamichhane, the former captain of Nepal’s cricket team, was suspended by the Cricket Association of Nepal in September while playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL 2022.

Following his suspension, he left the tournament, and while claiming his innocence on social media, he continued to play cricket, appearing in events such as the ODI World Cup qualifier and the ODI Asia Cup.

Lamichhane returned to Nepal’s cricket team in February amid continuous controversy, with opposition players refusing to shake hands with him during a Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series.

Despite the legal obstacles, Lamichhane’s lawyer, Saroj Ghimire, stated the cricketer’s intention to appeal the verdict.
