NEPRA raises electricity tariff by Rs2.75 per unit

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) delivered another blow to consumers by announcing a significant increase in electricity tariffs on Thursday.

In its notification, NEPRA revealed a hike of Rs2.75 per unit in electricity tariffs, effective for the next three months, imposing a substantial burden of Rs85.2 billion on consumers.

This decision comes as NEPRA approved the second-quarter adjustment for the fiscal year 2023-24. Despite Distribution Companies (Discos) requesting a larger increase of Rs4.43 per unit, NEPRA settled on the Rs2.75 increment.

The tariff adjustment, applicable to bills for April, May, and June, is attributed to various factors impacting operational costs in the power sector. NEPRA cited escalating fuel prices and maintenance expenses as primary drivers for the hike.

However, NEPRA has exempted Lifeline consumers using up to 50 units from this price increase, aiming to alleviate the burden on low-consumption households.

It’s noteworthy that K-Electric consumers will also experience this tariff hike, indicating a widespread impact across different electricity providers.

While the decision aims to balance operational costs in power generation and distribution, it raises concerns among consumers already facing economic challenges. With persistent inflationary pressures, this tariff hike could worsen financial strain for households and businesses.
