New Zealand batter Colin Munro bids farewell to international cricket after T20 WC snub

Colin Munro, the New Zealand batter, has decided to retire from international cricket after being left out of the Black Caps’ T20 World Cup squad.

Despite not playing for the national team since 2020, Munro harbored hopes of a comeback due to his strong performances in franchise T20 cricket, including the Pakistan Super League.

However, with the announcement of the T20 World Cup squad, Munro sees this as the right time to formally end that chapter.

Making his T20I debut in 2012 against South Africa, Munro played 122 white-ball matches for New Zealand, along with a single Test match in 2013.

His memorable 47-ball century against the West Indies in 2018 set a new standard for New Zealand’s fastest T20 century and made him the first player to achieve three T20I centuries.

Additionally, his rapid 14-ball half-century against Sri Lanka in 2016 remains New Zealand’s quickest in T20Is and ranks fourth globally.

Although he didn’t fulfill his dream of winning a T20 World Cup, Munro was part of the New Zealand team during the heartbreaking 2019 World Cup final loss against England.

While he plans to focus on franchise cricket, Munro’s legacy as a trailblazer of aggressive batting, known for his “360-degree style,” continues to be celebrated.

New Zealand Cricket’s Scott Weenink praised Munro for his pioneering approach, acknowledging his significant contributions to the game over more than a century of international appearances.
