Officer who brought to light Rs10bn theft fired from Pakistan Steel Mills

The Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) management has fired an officer, on charges of theft and misconduct, who brought to light the theft of Rs10 billion.

Engineer Abdul Rehman had filed a report to the chief executive officer (CEO) of PSM regarding the theft of material worth Rs10 billion along with identification of those involved.

According to media reports, instead of any inquiry or action on the matter, the administration opened an old inquiry against Rehman and dismissed him on charges of theft and misconduct.

A day after the Ministry of Industry and Production contacted the FIA for investigation, the dismissal letter to Rehman was issued.

The PSM management, in its reply to the ministry, stated that the officer who made the report had misbehaved with the corporate secretary.

The management said that Rehman was given a chance to apologize, however, he failed to appear and instead submitted fake medical reports.

Rehman told local media that he was framed in a false inquiry and that he would take legal action against the decision of his dismissal. He said that he was punished for bringing to light the actions of those who looted national assets.

He added that he was ready to defend his story at every forum.
