PM Khan nominates ex-CJ Gulzar Ahmed for caretaker PM

Fawad Chaudhry says decision made after consultation and approval from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Core Committee

Prime Minister Imran Khan has officially nominated former chief justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker prime minister.

In a tweet, former information minister Fawad Chaudhry said that PM Khan made the decision in response to the president’s letter. The decision was made after consultation and approval from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Core Committee. The opposition is yet to present its candidate for the position.

The former CJ’s nomination follows a letter written earlier today by President Dr. Arif Alvi to the prime minister and Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif to propose names of suitable persons for appointment as caretaker premier under Article 224-A(1) of the constitution.

The letter came a day after the NA deputy speaker disallowed a no-trust confidence motion against PM Imran and the president dissolved the lower house of parliament on the former’s advice.

The committee will consist of eight members of the outgoing National Assembly or the Senate or both and will have equal representation from the treasury and the opposition. These committee members would be nominated by the outgoing prime minister and the leader of the opposition, the letter said.
