PM stresses revenue potential of over Rs 24 trillion annually

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized on Saturday the immense revenue-generating capacity of Pakistan, surpassing Rs 24 trillion annually, despite the current annual tax target standing at Rs 9.4 trillion.

Addressing an event to honor diligent officers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that corruption, inefficiency, and negligence were causing approximately three times the annual revenue target to be squandered.

He underscored the significance of utilizing this substantial amount to address pressing national needs, such as debt repayment and the development of crucial infrastructure like hospitals, schools, universities, and roads.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the necessity of distinguishing between merit and malpractice in decision-making processes, asserting that the nation’s progress hinges on strict adherence to discipline among government officials.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s challenges, including a low tax to GDP ratio and mounting external and internal debts, the Prime Minister revealed measures to recover outstanding amounts, amounting to Rs 2.7 trillion, currently pending across various appellate forums.

Furthermore, he announced reforms in the appointment process of Appellant Tribunal Inland Revenue (ATIR) members, aiming for transparency and meritocracy by conducting open competitions and assessments through reputable institutions.
