PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah says induction of ‘independent’ senators, including Naqvi, continuation of hybrid regime

PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan criticized the election of independent candidates as senators, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, labeling it a “continuation of the hybrid system.”

During an interview on Dawn News program Doosra Rukh, Khan expressed his views, stating, “Making independent members senators is a continuation of the hybrid system of 2017.”

He remarked that if they had obtained a simple majority, the situation would have been different, potentially leading to discussions about the accountability of retired generals Qamar Javed Bajwa and Faiz Hameed.

However, Khan emphasized that despite the weak government, their priority is addressing people’s issues rather than creating chaos, especially considering the economic situation.

He asserted that those resorting to unconstitutional means would eventually face accountability, mentioning Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Faisal Vawda.

Khan expressed discontent with the decision to support Naqvi, attributing it to the “fruits” of the 2017 hybrid system, which they are slowly trying to control.

Regarding the process allowing independents to become senators, Khan questioned how it could happen in the current system, which he described as being under the influence of the hybrid system.

He admitted that while over 90% of his party was against supporting independents, the decision was made by Mian Nawaz Sharif to form a government after the February 8 polls, considering the potential worsening of the economic situation and the spread of chaos.
