‘Postpartum is as real as pregnancy’: Zara Noor Abbas on learning a whole new way of life after giving birth

Embracing motherhood is akin to entering a vibrant new realm of experiences it’s enchanting, overwhelming, and empowering.

However, amidst the candid sharing of pregnancy journeys and the transformative moment of childbirth, there’s a significant phase often overlooked the postpartum period.

This stage is as crucial to the maternal journey as the preceding nine months, prompting actor Zara Noor Abbas, who recently welcomed a baby girl with her husband Asad Siddiqui, to initiate a conversation about it.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Abbas shared her encounters navigating the ups and downs of postpartum life.

Since the arrival of Noor-e-Jahan on March 27, Abbas has openly discussed the rollercoaster ride following childbirth.

Accompanied by poignant snapshots capturing her newborn’s tiny shoes, a delightful cake, and celebratory moments, Abbas penned both a note of gratitude and a manifesto for new mothers.

She began by expressing her appreciation: “First and foremost Thank YOU to all my friends, family, and amazing fans for the love and prayers. I’ve read all the comments and messages.”

She then delved into the essence of her postpartum journey, describing it as a transition “from nothingness to everything,” filled with profound joy and empowerment.

“The rush of joy and power. The feeling that I can conquer anything now. The nourishment of empowerment and love. The tears, the all-nighters.”

Abbas also openly discussed the overwhelming sense of confusion and the steep learning curve that accompanies understanding a newborn’s needs from deciphering different cries to mastering the delicate art of baby massages.

The challenges of understanding the baby’s cues. Deciphering which cry signifies a particular need.

How to position the head, how to handle the fragile bones. These questions are only answered through solitary moments with the baby.

The pressure to grasp it all in these 40 days. It’s immense! It’s a lot! And I feel like we don’t talk enough about the journey after birth,” she wrote, shedding light on the intense reality of postpartum life often overlooked in mainstream discourse.

“POSTPARTUM. Lol. It’s real. It’s as real as pregnancy,” she emphasized.

Her advice to new mothers? Accept assistance and allow oneself to bask in achievements without succumbing to the pressure of perfection.

“Accept help. Rest. Eat. Sleep. Nap,” Abbas urged, stressing the significance of self-care and boundaries.

The most impactful aspect of her message was a reminder of the innate strength of motherhood: “You know why? Because you are a mother. And Mothers, oh Mothers! Don’t we know their strength enough?!”

Abbas’s note serves as a plea to normalize conversations surrounding postpartum challenges. By sharing her narrative, she hopes to inspire and reassure other new mothers that although the road to recovery may be arduous, they are not alone, and they possess inherent strength. As she assured, “You will be just fine.”

The reasons for maintaining silence about postpartum life are plentiful cultural taboos, privacy concerns, or simply the chaos of adjusting to life with a newborn.

Yet, openly discussing it can validate the experiences of countless other new mothers, offering solace during what can feel like a isolating period.

It’s crucial that we share these stories, not only to illuminate the realities of postpartum recovery but also to foster a sense of connection.
