Power was being passed on for the first time to elected representatives at the district level in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry stated on Monday.

He tweeted that only the Prime Minister had organized fair polls and delivered the pledge of a strong local government.

His statement was made a day after the first stage of local government (LG) polls in KP in which Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) was triumphant and attained seven tehsil chairman spots, while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured six.

The PM was the sole leader who had put the masses’ welfare above his political interests, he asserted.

He added if that was not the case, it would be easy to put a military strongman in the name of a chief minister and governor, which was the tradition of the PPP and PML-N.

He stated that an empowered system was being set up in Punjab too.

He stated while talking to a private TV channel, that the PTI was defeated due to election of a few non-affiliated candidates in the local government elections.

He remarked that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had been unsuccessful to win the voters’ admiration once again.

In response to a question whether the PTI was still popular in Punjab, he stated that people had no alternative except Imran Khan. He questioned whether Maryam Nawaz or Bilawal Bhutto Zardari should be elected to govern Pakistan.

The information minister blamed rising inflation for his party’s poor performance in the elections.

According to KP Labour and Human Rights Minister Shaukat Yousafzai, inflation was a reason for the poor performance of the governing party.

He stated that increasing inflation had affected the people and prices would hopefully decrease within the next two to three months.

On the other hand, following the defeat of the mayoral elections in Peshawar to the JUI by a huge margin, the PTI had decided to contest the outcome.
